Our Curriculum
The TIS curriculum is rigorous, interdisciplinary, and holistic. The combination of Indian, British and American curricula along with the unique Taktse approach to classroom management, discipline and school culture promotes high student achievement, encourages independent and creative thinking, and develops a life-long love of learning in all community members.
With small class sizes, TIS teachers know each child well. High frequency interaction, inquiry, and dialogue drive the learning process as students engage real life issues and learn to question, think critically, and find solutions. TIS classrooms are governed by mutual trust, respect, and collaboration. TIS teachers work with students to create an atmosphere of wonder, excitement, and discipline.
Taktse International School is a part of Cambridge Assessment International Examination, a department of University of Cambridge. At Taktse, we offer Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint for Grades VI through VIII, Cambridge IGCSE for Grades IX and X, Cambridge AS & A levels for Grades XI & XII. These qualifications are recognized and accepted by Association of Indian Universities as it prepares students for life, helping them to develop an informed curiosity and lasting passion for learning. FOUNTAS AND PINNELL BENCHMARK ASSESSMENT SYSTEM
Guided Reading is a model of teaching reading developed by two women - Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell, but Mrs. Maria L. Denjongpa, the Upper School Literacy Coordinator, brought it to Taktse in 2007.
Guided Reading is a teaching approach that aims at teaching effective strategies that help students process texts independently. It is based on the idea that kids in the same grade read at different levels and that it is important to have them read books at their level for them to grow as readers. The ultimate goal of Guided Reading is to help children learn how to use reading strategies effectively.
Taktse teachers take a reading assessment called the Benchmark Assessment at the beginning of the year to determine the approximate reading level of each of the students in the class. Once the teacher determines the reading levels (which go from A to Z) for individual students, they group together all the kids reading at the same level and get ready for instructions. There will be more than one guided reading group in a class. During the reading workshop, the teacher meets with a different group everyday for 25 - 30 minutes of reading.
The teacher chooses a text at the group's level, which can be either fiction or non-fiction. We have a comprehensive Guided Reading library that consists of fiction and non-fiction texts from levels A to Z. The teacher chooses the books keeping in mind the interest of the kids in a particular group. All the kids read the same book during that session. They may read a different book the next week. The goal of Guided Reading is to teach students reading strategies using a text at their level, so that they can apply these strategies when reading independently. After a particular group of students have had four to five Guided Reading sessions with the teacher, they are tested to see if they are ready to move to the next level. If they score well, they go up to the next level; otherwise, they stay at the same level and have more sessions with the teacher.

OUR
DHARMA
PROGRAM
A unique offering is an option to take the dharma class in grades 1 through 8. This is a exclusive initiative started in the year 2012 at
the direction of H.H. Dodrupchen Rinpoche. The four goals for the Dharma curriculum are:
1. Cultivate mindfulness
2. Cultivate kindness and empathy
3. Understand Lord Buddha and
Guru Rinpoche’s teachings
4. Inculcate a sense of connection with nature and all living beings
Keeping these holistic goals in mind, dharma classes are more focused in small group discussions, sharing stories, and experiences, read alouds and memorizing and understanding the meanings of the prayers and their importance. Students are taught how to make prayer flags, wicks for butter lamps, visit monasteries to interview monks, discuss and understand the murals on the walls of the monasteries and integrate the class goals into their everyday lives.
